Protecting You/Protecting Me

Dear Friends in Prevention,

We applaud another year of your diligent efforts in support of safe and drug free children and communities for our nation though prevention, education, enforcement, policy and advocacy. Your work to prevent underage alcohol use in your communities is saving our young people’s lives.

Do you want to do more to save young peoples’ lives? Could the youth and adults in your community benefit from knowledge about the impact of alcohol use on adolescent brain development? Could youth empowered with information about their own development make healthier choices around alcohol use and influence others to make those same healthy choices?

If you answered ‘YES!’ to any of the above, read on – we have an opportunity that just might interest you!

You could bring an evidence-based program - Protecting You/Protecting Me® - to your community to supplement your existing prevention efforts.

State Farm®, Mothers Against Drunk Driving® (MADD) and Bliss, Inc. have formed a partnership to bring the youth-led implementation model of Protecting You/Protecting Me® (PY/PM) to schools across the country. PY/PM is a SAMHSA Model Program for students in grades 1-5 based on the latest brain research and the impact of alcohol on the developing brain (learn more at www.pypm.org). The youth-led model of PY/PM is designed to be implemented by high school students enrolled in an upper level, full year elective class for credit in which the teacher has received training on the implementation of PYPM. The class can be designated as a peer helping, leadership or mentoring class, or any class that involves service-learning.

The partnership’s goal is to establish fifty (50) school sites across the country that will commit to implementing PY/PM and the service-learning projects that are designed to inform the community about the impact of alcohol on the developing brain beginning in the 2007-2008 school year.

Getting involved is simple!  If you know of high school sites that have an established peer helping, leadership or mentoring class or a service-learning class, that school site is eligible for this project. State Farm will underwrite the training registration fee and materials cost for the high school classroom teacher to attend a National Teacher Training Institute for youth-led Protecting You/Protecting Me.

We are in the process of scheduling Institute dates for this year.  We anticipate four Institutes in the late summer: New York, Chicago, another in the Pacific Northwest or West Coast, and one is scheduled in Dallas, Texas for August 1-3, 2007.  We have attached an informational brochure and will notify you once all training dates are confirmed.

If you have any questions about the project or the training, please contact the PY/PM Office toll free at 866.660.6680. We look forward to working with you on this important project.
